When the clocks jump forward each spring, something magical happens. Yes, we lose an hour of sleep, but we gain something even better… long golden evenings that stretch past 7 p.m. and offer some of the best sunset views in the U.S.
I’ve heard that not everyone is a fan of Daylight Saving Time, but I absolutely love it! That extra hour of daylight and the sunsets that seem to hint at warmer days ahead bring me so much joy. And when it comes to travel, this time of year is one of the best. Summer crowds are still months away. Temperatures are comfortable. And prices are often still shoulder-season reasonable.
But the days? They are long and luminous, the perfect antidote for those winter blues (and if you’re from the Midwest, you know what I mean… Have you even seen your neighbors this year or are they still hibernating?).
If you’re looking for a place to enjoy those longer evenings, keep reading for a few of our favorite sunset spots across the United States. For future travel inspiration, save this post or share it with someone who would love to share the sunsets with you.
Best Mountain Sunset Views
Yosemite National Park, California
Being from California, we of course have to lead off with Yosemite National Park as one of the best sunset views in the U.S. (and much more!). Yosemite is one of America’s most breathtaking national parks, and sunset is when the granite cliffs begin to glow. One of the easiest sunset viewpoints in the park is Cook’s Meadow, where you can watch Half Dome light up without much of a hike.
If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, hike to the top of Sentinel Dome. The panoramic views of Yosemite Valley are spectacular from that vantage point, especially as the sun dips behind the mountains. Just be sure to wear good hiking shoes and bring a flashlight or headlamp for the hike back down after sunset.
Want to stay in the park and expand your experience to include sunrise views, afternoon picnics and sunset hikes? You’ll definitely want to plan ahead! While you don’t need a reservation ahead of time to enter the park in 2026, you will definitely need to make a reservation well ahead of time for your accommodations. Yosemite is a very popular destination and rooms fill up fast!
Roan Mountain, Tennessee/North Carolina
The Blue Ridge Mountains offer breathtaking views that make you feel like you’re inside a painting. Standing on top of the ridge, you feel like you can see forever. And the colors…!
Roan Mountain sits along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina and offers some of the most beautiful ridge-line hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. On a road trip between Hilton Head Island and Indianapolis, we detoured to take a hike along the Appalachian Trail, starting at Carver’s Gap.
Trail Fast Facts:
- There are several trail variations you can take, but we opted for a 5-mile out-and-back hike from the Carver’s Gap trailhead to Grassy Ridge Bald
- Easy to moderate terrain
- Takes you to Round Bald (5,826 ft. elevation), Jane Bald (5,807 el.) and Grassy Ridge Bald (6,189 el.)
- Standing atop the balds rewards you with sweeping views of the mountains and valleys below
If you love wide-open views and glowing mountain sunsets, this is a hike you’ll never forget.

Best Waterfront Sunset Views
Kennebunkport, Maine
A sunset over the ocean or a quiet bay is one of the most peaceful ways to end a day. While spending time in Boston, Massachusetts, we decided to take a drive up into Maine. Just 90-minutes away is Kennebunkport where you can relax along miles of soft, sandy beaches during the day, then head into town for a lobster dinner after sunset.

Savannah Riverwalk, Georgia
If your perfect sunset includes water, history, and a slower pace, Savannah delivers. The Savannah Riverwalk is a lovely place to spend the late afternoon wandering through shops and historic streets before settling in to watch the sun dip over the river. After sunset, grab a table at one of the waterfront restaurants and enjoy some fresh seafood while the lights begin to sparkle across the river.

Seattle, Washington
Few sunsets feel more cinematic than watching the sky fade over Puget Sound. And one of the best places to experience it is from the top of the Seattle Space Needle. If you time your visit just right, you can arrive while it’s still daylight, enjoy the sweeping city views, and then stay to watch the sun set over the water as the city lights begin to glow.

Best Desert Sunset Views
Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada
Located less than an hour from Las Vegas, Valley of Fire State Park is one of the most stunning desert landscapes in the American Southwest. Spring is one of the best times to visit, when average daytime temperatures are typically in the 70s to low 90s, far more comfortable than the triple-digit summer heat. Two of our favorite hikes were:
- Fire Wave & Seven Wonders Loop
A 1.8-mile trail featuring colorful rock formations and winding slot canyons. - Mouse’s Tank Trail
A short ¾-mile hike where you’ll discover ancient petroglyphs carved into the rock.
If you’re making plans to visit Vegas, don’t miss this stunning desert escape just outside the city.

Phoenix and Sedona, Arizona
Spring is an especially fun time to visit Phoenix thanks to MLB spring training. Games run through late March, bringing baseball fans from all over the country. But baseball isn’t the only draw. The desert landscapes around Phoenix offer incredible hiking, especially before summer temperatures arrive.
One of the most popular hikes is Camelback Mountain, a challenging climb that rewards you with panoramic views of Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Paradise Valley.
If you have extra time, consider making the 2-hour drive to Sedona, where towering red rock formations and peaceful desert energy create a completely different kind of adventure.
Thinking about hiking Camelback or escaping to Sedona’s red rocks? Here’s everything we learned.

Where will you watch the sunset?
The best sunset views might be right in your own backyard. Or chasing the perfect sunset might be just the excuse you need to plan your next adventure. Either way, the longer days of spring are a wonderful reminder to slow down, stay outside a little longer, and watch as Mother Nature puts on a show.
Where is your favorite sunset spot?

I love to watch the sunset are on the beach off Lake Michigan or better yet Lake Huron in the UP of Michigan but nothing beats watching the sun set from the mountains in Colorado. Truly breathtaking!!
